Breed: |
Chihuahua/Mixed Breed |
|
|
|
Korra is a 1 year old Chihuahua mixed breed that joined us from a local shelter. She had been picked up as a stray, was experiencing no adoption prospects, and her time was running out.
Korra has been in foster care with us (LCAL) for the past six weeks or so, and has unpacked enough to show who she really is at this point.
When it comes to other dogs, she wants to be friends with all. She's really good at reading a situation so she'll back off immediately if another dog shows no interest. She loves to wrestle and will keep trying until other dogs fall for her. Her foster mom feels she would be a 'perfect kid dog' as she is Gentle and loving showing lots of interest in the kids over the fence.
On a scale from 1 to 10, Korra's energy level clocks in at about 8. She's a friendly happy, curious and open dog who looks for joy in everything. Rides well in a car, although on extended drives she may get anxious but some reassuring pets calms her right down. The first time she meets a new face she gets a bit barky-protective but she learns quickly so a second visit is much calmer.
She does very well in the crate, able to spend 6 hour periods (max) in it when her foster mom is not home. She sleeps fine in her crate and self crates sometimes. Getting Korra to be in her crate is never a problem unless the other dogs are out & having fun.
Korra is basically down for everything, but wrestling is her favorite. She loves to toss around soft toys, will chase a ball but does not feel overly obligated to return it most of the time.
If you'd like to learn more about Korra or set up a meeting with her, please click the link below and fill out an adoption application to get the ball rolling. Korra would love to meet you!

2 years |
Status: |

Breed: |
Mastiff |
|
|
|
Buttercup is a 2 year old female Mastiff who was found as a stray. She has a gentle and shy demeanor and is reported to be dog friendly. She is very eager to meet other dogs, approaches them cautiously (after permission from other owner) and mostly sniffs them without growling, barking, etc.
On a scale from 1 to 10 gauging energy level, Buttercup checks in at a solid '7', acceptable for most families. She gets along well with children and has been tested with a toddler at an earlier foster family. As for her crate performance, she does well sleeping in it overnight. During the day when she is left for 10-15 minutes with a treat, she does ok for first 5 minutes, then cries/whines. Goes in at night without coaxing, during the day she needs a treat.
Buttercup's foster parent reports:
"Each day she becomes more comfortable in her surroundings, especially outdoors. She is very content to sit outside and watch the neighborhood. On every walk, she is stopped by half a dozen "admirers" who tell her how beautiful and sweet she is."
Also:
"She would do well in a home with multiple members and more than one person to be with. Would likely not do as well spending most of her time alone, as she is most at ease with others. Her temperament is great- no aggression, does not bark and is good with dogs and people. She is young and does not know many commands, so she will need some dedicated training."
Buttercup has begun reviewing applications so If you are interested in meeting her, please take the first step by clicking the link below and filling out an adoption application to get the ball rolling.

Name: |
Marco |
Sex: |
Male |
Age: |
3 years |
Status: |
Available |
Breed: |
Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler/Mixed Breed |
|
|
|
Marco is a beautiful Red Heeler mix with lots of interest in herding whatever there is to herd. He is a dog that would do best in a single-dog family as he is not interested in the companionship of other dogs, cats or children.
Marco will soon be ready for his forever home!! He is currently in a board and train program
with Specialty Dog Training here in Oceanside, CA and in the ideal world, he would transition
from his training program directly into his new adoptive home. His board and train program
includes lessons for his new owners so here is a great opportunity to adopt a dog who has
several weeks of intensive training AND additional lessons for his new humans to help get
“them on board” with the training as well!
According to his trainer, this handsome guy is your typical cattle dog – intelligent, energetic,
loyal to his human(s), can be wary of strangers and not necessarily concerned about building a
group of canine friends. Marco will thrive with a breed savvy owner who is looking for good-
looking, canine partner to share life with. Going to dog parks or lying under the table at a café is
not something Marco would enjoy but a moderately strenuous hike or a learning a new activity
like scent training would be right up his alley!
As with all cattle dogs, solid leadership from his human and a daily routine with structure will
help Marco live his best life. He has been gaining confidence each week in his training program
as he learns new skills and understands what is being ask of him. While his trainer believes he
could co-exist with another dog, he seems to be selective in his choice of canine friends. We
have not seen him around children but unless the home is very breed savvy, we would not
recommend a home with children. Marco appreciates his space and children typically do not
understand this concept well.
If you are interested in adopting a dog with the mind of a rocket scientist and exceptionally good looks, Marco could be the one for you. He is currently reviewing applications so please click below and submit yours today if you'd like to come meet him.

Are you looking for the perfect little gentlemen to join your family?!🐾♥️✨ Look no further, Charlie is your perfect boy! He even comes with his very own built-in tux. 🤵🏾 Charlie had quite a bit of down time recovering from his neuter, so he spent some time writing a letter to his future family, to share a little bit about himself and what he’s been up to.🐾 ♥️ Dear furever family, Hi, my name is Charlie. I am 1 year old and according to the vet I am now 62 pounds and still growing! But that just means there is more of me to love and believe me when I say I have lots of LOVE to give! I am a such a lover! I love kisses, cuddles and all the snuggles. The Hooman's who found me think I am a mastiff mix. I agree I have the mastiff size, but I have the heart of a lab and the wiggles of a boxer. I am currently living with my foster family. I have been with them for over a month, and it has been a blast living in a cozy home with a family! I have a brother named Hobbs who I look up to! We love to box and wrestle! And then there is my sister Maple, don't let her size fool you, she is little but mighty. We like to play tag! She is fast but not as fast as me! She is my favorite cuddle buddy, sometimes I use her as my pillow, but she doesn’t mind. Hobbs and Maple have been showing me around their stomping ground and have taken me on a couple fun hikes, I hiked 6 miles the other day! I am becoming quite the adventurous trail pup! My foster dad also takes me on bike rides, and I do my very best to keep up. When you meet me I am going to be in the best shape ever! When I am not playing with my brother and sister, I enjoy playing fetch and tug of war with my hoomans. I also enjoy going on outings! My foster parents sometimes take me out to dinner with them and I love all the love and attention I get from other hoomans. I guess I’m pretty charming. As you can see, I am a very active pup that loves to play outdoors, but I also love to lay back and chill. My favorite time of day is just lounging in the backyard, sunbathing and watching movies on couch with my foster parents and siblings. In the evenings I sleep in my crate all through night, in the mornings I am let out to handle my morning business and then I get to enjoy some morning cuddles in bed. I look forward to my brekky and din din, and enjoy eating in the safety and peacefulness of my crate. I am a very smart boy and have been learning how to sit, we are also working on down and stay. I just need more practice but I know I’ll eventually get it. I would love to find a forever home where I will continue to be spoiled and loved like I am here. Where I can go on long walks and many outdoor adventures. Where I can explore new places. Where I can play fetch. I really want to have another energetic fur brother or sister to play with and cuddle with. But most importantly I want a home where I will be treated as part of the family. I am a growing boy who needs a family who will be patient and give me the time and energy to help me learn and grow into the bestest boy I know can be. Xoxoxoxo ♥️ Charlie If you are ready to welcome this sweet prince into your home and have him become part of your family you can fill out an application at https://lastchanceatlife.org/dog-adoption-application/ ♥️✨🐾

Name: |
Cali |
Sex: |
Female |
Age: |
1 year |
Status: |
Available |
Breed: |
Border Collie/Mixed Breed |
|
|
|
Cali is a healthy and social 1.5 year old who was scheduled to be euthanized due to shelter crowding. One of our fosters saw the shelter's SOS to find a rescue exit for her, and committed to taking her in. Our volunteer coordinator sent out an email to our volunteers hoping to find someone who would make the 8 hour round trip to give this sweet girl her freedom ride to LCAL. It was a big last minute ask, especially given the weather, but one of our amazing volunteer transporters said YES!
Cali is safe and now the work begins to find her perfect forever home.
Cali is currently in foster care with her foster mom, foster dad and furry foster brother, Morty (male, neutered) a 12-13 year old basset/setter mix breed dog. Here are some notes from her foster mom:
How does she respond to other dogs?
She is curious about other dogs on walks and can get excited depending on the dog. She loves my dog. Submits to his dominance, and is learning to pick up his cues when he does not want to play. I think she'd be great with another dog with the same energy level she has.
Skills?
Walks well on leash , Understands sit , Plays fetch, Knows her name
Is there anything you are currently working on with your foster pup?
Cali is not yet house trained and is still learning to go potty when we are on walks, this is something we are currently working on. Cali is still young and behaves much like a puppy, she has puppy energy and we are teaching her to redirect that energy on her hard toys, like a nylabone. Like any young rescue pup, she could use basic obedience skills.
How has your dog been doing in the crate and what have your expectations been?
I put her in the crate to sleep, eat, and when I am gone. My dog resource guards, so I will keep doing this. She goes in when lured with a treat/food/toy. I will continue to train her to go in when asked. She does not seem to mind being in the crate and has only been anxious once when I left her. She does spontaneously bring toys into her crate and has gone in to sleep once during the day.
On a scale from 1 to 10, what is the energy level of your dog?
She’s a solid 7.
Describe the temperament of your dog:
Friendly, playful, loving, curious, energetic, people-oriented. She loves people and affection, again, she does have a lot of "puppy-like" energy.
If you would like to learn more about Cali or if you feel she is the perfect K9 companion for you, please click the link below to submit an application today and a member of our team will contact you asap.

Name: |
Chance |
Sex: |
Male |
Age: |
3 years |
Status: |
Available |
Breed: |
Labrador Retriever/Mixed Breed |
|
|
|
While Chance is described as having a fairly high energy level, being such a youngster, he also is described by his foster family as being intelligent and wanting to please his owners.
INTERACTIVITY
We give Chance the benefit of the doubt when it comes to how he might be with cats because, while he has been known to attempt chase of rabbits when they are within range, he is still a youngster and, we believe, smart enough to be trained to leave kitties he cohabitates with alone.
He is loving and able to get along with other dogs, although is not described as one who appreciates other dogs who are overly in his space and will let them know as needed.
Chance's foster parents say he is a fast learner, likes routine and is very affectionate. He is learning leash skills and does better everyday, but he's not there yet. He loves to play ball and tug-o-war, and when the door to his crate is opened, he sits and waits for his leash to be put on.
ABILITIES
Skills: Understands sit, stay, go to bed, Plays fetch and Shakes hands. Our foster families use the dog crate to help our dogs calm themselves and to provide them with a den where they can check out and relax. It is not considered 'jail' by us or our dogs. Chance is a case in point as he views his crate as a positive place where he will receive treats and can count on being left alone. He happily goes there at bedtime and whenever else his foster family needs him to.
PERSONALITY
Chance still finds the world new and exciting, so can pull on the leash and react to people, dogs and noise. But he's a fast learner and very manageable.
He loves his foster family and loves spending time with them. If he's outside and they step in for a minute, he'll sit and wait by the door to be let in too. He has learned his routine, walks- playtime, meals, crate time. He routinely spends time side by side with his foster dog sibling Janet. Everyday shows improvement.
Chance is currently reviewing applications and is hoping to find the perfect family for his needs. If you are interested in meeting him, please click the link below, fill out an application and we'll get the ball rolling for you.

Name: |
Andy |
Sex: |
Male |
Age: |
1 year |
Status: |
Available |
Breed: |
Border Collie/Mixed Breed |
|
|
|
Andy is an engaging, fun-loving and energetic dog who believes in greeting life head-on. He does not seem to have any hang-ups at this point and so far, gets along with all life forms.
Interactions
He loves spending time with his people and children over 12 yrs old. We are not certain about smaller kids simply because he has not yet been tested with them and we suspect he may bowl them over with exuberance. Either way, continued training and further testing will be key for Andy as it is with all dogs.
When it comes to other dogs, Andy tends to want to play. His off-leash time with other dogs has been limited but he walks nicely on-leash with other dogs. He is not bothered by barking dogs along the way when out for a walk. He can be a little “forward” in his energy and presentation when first meeting another dog so introductions need to be done appropriately. Again, a focus on consistency and training are important.
Andy is fully housetrained and behaves well in the home. He enjoys the company of people and loves meeting new folks when the occasion arises. He is quite social yet able to content himself when alone. Good when kenneled - no barking or whining.
General Abilities
Walks well on leash
Understands sit
Understands stay
Understands down
Understands go to bed
Threshold trained
Plays fetch
Self crates
Shakes hands
Andy does fine when kenneled where he currently spends 3 to 4 hours at a time before going out for an hour or so to exercise, train, play, etc. He also kennels well overnight and does well in his crate in the car.
Advanced Abilities
He has been taught a number of basic obedience and other related skills/tricks. He enjoys learning and “asks” to work.
Andy is able to transition between sit/down/stand in any combination; knows place; waits at thresholds and knows “wait”, uh-uh and no.
We have not worked specifically on his ability to manage distractions which will need some work - especially with things like flying birds.
Andy knows “target” and will spin CW and CCW while on target; knows “two-on” (used in agility); knows “middle” (comes and sits between your legs when you are in a standing position; knows “shake” right and left front paws; knows “out” and knows to “go around” when playing fetch.
Also, trimming his hair, nails and other grooming tasks are easy because Andy will let you touch him all over including paws, lips, ears and teeth without concern.
Challenges
We are working on his ‘mouthy-ness’ with people (typical in puppies), and not getting so wound up when overtaken with a bout of the ‘zoomies’ (energetic running around in the yard).
Personality
Andy is just an all around great little dog who will benefit from a home that enjoys doing things with him including training - not necessarily because he needs it but because he enjoys it and thrives on it. He is the type of dog that likes having a job to do and is happiest when his mind is kept engaged such as being challenged by learning new tricks or doing agility tests.
If you are interested in adopting a dog with a lot of smarts and a strong desire to please, Andy could be the one for you. He is currently reviewing applications so if you would like to take the first step to meeting him, please click below and submit yours today.

Bolo |
Sex: |
Male |
Age: |
3 years |
Status: |
Available |
Breed: |
Mixed Breed |
|
|
|
Bolo is a cute, fun, playful little guy. He warms up quickly to people, but needs slow introductions and a gentle touch from his humans. He has gained confidence with his foster and loves going for car rides and walks. He has lived in foster homes with dogs and cats and loves having a fur sibling to play with, a yard to run around in and toys to play with.
Bolo also enjoys his crate which he counts on as a comfortable place where he can relax and decompress on his own. In fact, he will often entertain himself by playing with toys in his crate alone.
He is fully house trained, a great companion, and would do best in a lower traffic home that also provided the opportunity to run and play.
Bolo loves to snuggle, often burrowing his head right in to your lap to initiate a session! At the same time, he doesn't seem to mind spending time alone. When he has a chew toy and his bed, he will enjoy a gnawing session, so much so, that he is easily forgotten because he is so quiet!
In his foster homes, Bolo has lived with a feline sister he loved dearly and a dog who was similar in size and temperament that was his side-kick. He is aware he is not a big guy, so he can be cautious around high energy and larger dogs.
If you are interested in adopting a dog with a personality and good looks, Bolo could be the one for you. He is currently reviewing applications so please click below and submit yours today if you feel you could be a good match for him.

Name: |
Chevy |
Sex: |
Male |
Age: |
3 years |
Status: |
Available |
Breed: |
Shepherd |
|
|
|
Chevy is an elegant German Shepherd whose foster mom describes as gentle and responsive. He is a dog that loves to learn and play, and likes cuddling when the mood strikes.
Chevy gets along well with children but he is a big boy with long legs who can sometimes be too much for smaller kids. That being said, he would do well in a calm home so older children might be a better bet for him. He loves playing ball and chewing on his chew toys. He walks and runs well on a leash, understands ‘sit’, ‘stay’, ‘down’ and ‘go to bed’. He loves working on his agility skills.
Chevy enjoys having family and friends over to the house, but he is uncertain of people who wear hats or sunglasses. He recovers quickly when these items are removed whereupon he will take treats and begin asking for attention.
He is not a fan of loud, sudden noises like fireworks or sirens, yet recovers fairly quickly after these occurrences. Chevy is well behaved in the house and likes to spend time peacefully with his ‘hedgehog’, a favorite stuffed animal. During a recent storm, Chevy would not come inside because his beloved hedgehog was stuck under the dog bed and he refused to abandon it alone in the rain.
Along with sudden noises, Chevy is not partial to taking a bath, although he somehow loves the water hose. He also avoids rain gutters or anything that makes a hollow water sound.
Chevy is completely crate-trained, which he views as a sanctuary where he can take refuge when he chooses and will also go when asked by his humans. He is accustomed to eating his meals in his crate and has been trained to wait for the door to close and the cue to begin eating before starting his meal.
Chevy is looking forward to meeting his new family soon, is it you? If you think you may be right for Chevy, please fill out an adoption application now and come meet him.

Name: |
Curly |
Sex: |
Male |
Age: |
3 years |
Status: |
Available |
Breed: |
Terrier/Mixed Breed |
|
|
|
Curly is a typical, healthy adolescent pup who is about as ideal as he can get. His small cash & carry size means he's able to go with you just about everywhere.
On the activity scale between 1 and 10, Curly clocks in at a solid 5, is house trained, gets along with other dogs and has a healthy respect for cats whom he typically steers clear of but also lives well with (his foster family includes two other dogs + one skeptical cat).
Curly has settled into his new foster home very nicely, his foster parent is happy and impressed with his good behavior and manners in the household. He is a very relaxed dog who likes to hang out with his people and receive affection. He will lay or sit nearby his person while they work or do whatever, follows his person around and responds well when his name is called. His energy level is pretty neutral and if you're relaxing, he's relaxing, if you're up and moving, so is he.
We have not yet had Curly around children during his time at LCAL and have no prior info on this, however he is very social with humans so we suspect he would do well in a home with kids. More on this as he continues to unpack with us.
Curly is a huge love, super sweet and snuggly who seeks out attention as much as he gives it. He will spontaneously take himself to bed at night, and sometimes, in the early morning, Curly manages to slither into his foster's bed undetected and fall asleep under the covers.
Curlys foster parent says the person or family who adopts Curly will be very lucky indeed.
Even though he is a new arrival, Curly is already reviewing adoption applications so if you are interested in meeting him to see if he might be a match for you and your family, be sure to fill out an application by clicking the link below and we'll set up a meeting for you.
